First sewing pattern: freebies to try

Updated: Jun 19, 2020

When I first started, I had zero clues about where to get patterns. So, I think I will share the patterns and pattern shops I love, and of course, the freebies I love!

This is a living document, I will keep adding as I sew.

Most of the patterns I own are suitable for beginners like me. I have not yet sewn anything that's super crazily complicated, but some have options that could use some patience or practice to be better (e.g. buttonholes, zippers).

Woollen Vest 12m-6years (Link)

The woollen vest is just my love! It's a basic one to go into your kids' wardrobe as layering for the cold weather! You can use snaps or buttons, fleece, or wool. Just a very nice pattern considering it's free!

Tri-ibble Bib (Link)

I probably would never buy any bibs from the store anymore... it's just a super easy one for beginners to start with. Easy to make, only requires a small amount of scrap. Try it!

This is one of my favorite pattern companies, all the patterns are just too cute and step-by-step instructions are super clear. The pattern support group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/582456251788674/) is very active with lots of inspirations and supportive feedback.

Raleigh and Baby Raleigh (Link / Link)

Super cute reversible top featuring woven fabrics and no closure! If you want to try woven top but too scared to do buttons, snaps or zippers, this is your go-to pattern (and it's free).

The 2 patterns include sizes from newborn to size 14, which I just realized I might be able to fit in size 14, should I try?

Verona (Link)

I haven't tried this myself yet, but it's on the to-do list. Perfect project if you are looking for upcycling your pillowcase!

Girl's Peplum top (Link)

I think this was my first pattern/project using knit fabrics. I bought these doodle fabrics from Joann's when I had zero idea how to pick fabrics. But look, how cute they are (and look at that chubby thighs! I'm crying)

Sizes from 18m to 12 yr.

Sew A Little Seam (Affiliate link)

Movie Night Pajamas (Men/Women/Children Affiliate link)

Head over to the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/sewalittleseam/) to get your free code for the family fun sewing project! You can also find other free patterns in their pattern shop.

And, this is on the to-do list as well for the Fall season, can't wait to make everyone a set of Movie night PJs!!

To get the free pattern code, join their Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/PeekaBooPatternShop) for the code to get their freebie patterns.

Romperalls (Affiliate link)

Super quick sew for the romperall, I think I might make a size larger cause this was too "fit" for her.

Tiny Chef Apron (Affiliate link)

This was a super quick nap project (I made when she was napping...) upcycling curtains. She loves it! And of course, we had so much fun baking together.

Baggy V (Kids/Women's)

I just recently from this pattern/fabric company that I am in love with!

I sewed both the women's (size XS) and kids' (size 18m) version and absolutely love them! For the women version, I went for "sleeveless", which shows more of a dolman top and made with short sleeves for the kids' version.

Bella Sunshine Designs (Affiliate link)

Reagan Raglan (kids/women affiliate link)

Made her the Reagan Raglan top and matching bottom with the super cute spaceXfloral fabrics, meant to celebrate the launch for spaceX (and it was fun!). BSD also has the women's version (and ya.. I printed them but haven't had the chance to make it!)

All you need to do is to sign up their newsletter, then you'll be able to access the free patterns!

Made this tank top for myself with waffle knit and it's so comfy! Not showing on this photo, but I matched the back stripes to perfection! After my mom sew me wearing this, she actually asked me to make her one, and so I did! This was the best compliment you can get and I love it!

They actually have a lot more freebies on the website, which you may link there and try them out yourself!

Love Notions (Affiliate link)

Love Notions has recently been my personal favorite sewing group. Their patterns always come in many selections, where basically you can make probably 5-10 different outfits from the same pattern you purchased.

Leggin's (Affiliate link)

Miss A has been wearing these leggin's and they're super easy to make! The only downside of this is knowing how short her legs are, just like her mama.

Laundry Day Tee (Affiliate link)

This is the LDT that everyone makes. I have to admit that... I haven't made this for myself, mostly because I started making myself clothes very recent! But...to-make list, this is on top of it! Join their Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/lovenotionspatternsupport/) to acquire that code for free LDT pattern!

So, a long list of freebies that I love, and each of the companies mostly have a lot more freebies than above. So, you don't necessarily need to buy a pattern to start, there's awful lot of free ones from knit to woven that you can try.

Don't ask me why I buy patterns, you'll know why once you click into the pattern groups and starts sewing. You'll know.

Alright, enough talking. I'll see you in my next blog post! Stay tuned!

Affiliate links: When you make a purchase through the affiliate links, I get commissions for purchases.
